BRAVE Adam Oomer can now walk unaided — thanks to family, friends and Bolton News readers.

Big-hearted donors rallied round to raise almost £46,000 for pay for a life-changing operation Adam, aged five, from Morris Green, who suffers from diplegic cerebral palsy, underwent a four-hour selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) operation and surgery to have his tendons lengthened to relieve limited motion in his joints.

His hamstring and heel cords have been lengthened in both legs.

The money to pay for the operation in St Louis Children’s Hospital, Missouri, along with travel and accommodation costs was raised in just seven months.

Adam’s parents Mohammed and Alyha, and brothers Zayan, aged six, and Yousuf, aged three, spent three weeks in America with the Heathfield Primary School pupil.

Mrs Oomer said: “He has always been happy but since this operation he seems so much happier. He has grown in confidence.”

Adam still has physiotherapy and hydrotherapy twice a week and is using a treadmill, which was donated by charity The Frost Foundation, every day.

For the first time he has been able to ride a tricycle and will start horse riding next month.

Mr Oomer said: “He had such a big smile when he went on the tricycle for the first time. He had always wanted to ride a bike.

“Adam used to cry in the night because of the pain in his legs but he has no pain now.”

Mrs Oomer added: “People used to stare at Adam but we don’t notice that now. He has got his first pair of trainers. He was so excited to get them.”

Adam will wear Spiderman splints on his legs while his muscles get stronger.

His recovery will be assessed by video in six months. If doctors are not satisfied with his progress he may require further treatment in America.

Mr and Mrs Oomer believe Adam would have eventually depended on a wheelchair without the operation. The family is continuing to fundraise for more physiotherapy sessions. They also want to buy Adam a tricycle to aid his development.
