I WANT to welcome the new community of ‘fresher’ students to Bolton.

I worked nights in the town centre over the weekend and personally met and became a ‘selfie’ souvenir for a large number of students.

May I also thank various venues for providing specialised events for the ‘freshers’ that again focused on safety and safety zones.

The underlying message is ‘be safe and have fun, Bolton has a lot to offer’.

It would be remiss of me not to highlight the problems of excessive drinking and again remind all of the potentially fatal consequences of drink-fuelled violence.

I would encourage ‘freshers’ to review the every action has a consequence web site, www.eahconsequences.com.

If anyone wants more information on how your local policing team can assist you with these events or support in general, please contact 0161 856 5619.

Meanwhile, National Personal Safety Day is just a couple of weeks away.

The event on October 6 this year is organised by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, and aims to highlight some of the simple, practical solutions that everyone can use to help avoid violence and aggression in today’s society.

It’s about helping people live safer and more confident lives. This year’s theme is ‘Door 2 Door’.

The theme will look at the personal safety issues in your journey from when you leave your door and reach the door of your destination.

This could include leaving your home to go to work or leaving school to get to a youth centre or safety on a night out.

I would encourage all of you to embrace this safety day and think of people in our communities who would benefit from this advice and support.

For more information visit www.nationalpersonalsafetyday.co.uk on Monday, October 6, 2014.
