THERE are some British institutions that should never be tampered with and TV show “Dad’s Army” is one of them.
Generations feel they have grown up with pompous Captain Mannering and innocent Private Pike, and the much-repeated programmes are still on at prime-time. And still eliciting belly laughs and an odd sense of nostalgia, given that most of the viewers don’t know anything about wartime first-hand.
Now, there’s going to be a new Dad’s Army film and I really wish they wouldn’t. in spite of the fact that personal favourites like Bill Nighy (Sgt Wilson), Tom Courtnay (Corporal Jones) and Michael Gambon (Godfrey) are lined up in a terrific cast.
In spite of their unassailable acting pedigree, they’re wasting their time. Captain Mannering will always be Arthur Lowe and Ian Lavender could never be replaced as Private Frank Pike. Stupid boys to think all this could ever change.
