FIRST of all, I have a confession to make.

I used to work for Bolton Council’s parking services, behind a counter or on the phone, taking people’s money.

I also cancelled the odd ticket here and there — but only if someone’s appeal met with a strict set of rules.

I still sometimes wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night, feeling guilty for having such an evil job.

But then again, I am a journalist now.

There was something of a hoo-ha last week when two drivers were ticketed on Remembrance Sunday — when they parked in loading bays in Silverwell Street.

Amazingly, the council cancelled their fines as a goodwill gesture. I’m not sure I would have done the same.

You can park for free practically anywhere in Bolton on a Sunday — the NCP car parks are free and on street pay and display is free.

How unlucky (or stupid) do you have to be to get a parking fine on a Sunday?
