BOLTON’S Octagon theatre has long established itself as a special attraction the theatrical world.
Now, two years away from celebrating its 50th birthday, ambitious new plans have been announced to modernise its town centre premises to take it into a new and even more glittering era.
Options include a scheme costing £2 million, up to a £12 million revamp which would see the theatre extended outwards and upwards. Unsurprisingly, the current building has outgrown its needs and doesn’t meet modern standards in various areas.
This is all good news for the town and for British theatre generally as the Octagon has long been an innovator, providing a blueprint for the best of regional theatre.
It’s also always been a great visitor magnet, and has helped establish Bolton’s arts’ reputation firmly within the national picture. The new plans suggest we can all look forward to this cultural gem continuing, and thriving.
