YOU may well be a fan of panel games but, sorry, I just find some of them irritating and silly.

The BBC is pulling the plug on Never Mind the Buzzcocks and, although I’ve liked several of the comically sharp individuals taking part, I’m quite glad.

Panel games and quizzes need to be very clever these days to stay the course and gain the public’s enduring interest. Some of them just seem plain daft.

There’s a huge exception here for Pointless – the daily teatime dose of quizzing which first began o BBC2 in 2009 and was so popular it was moved to BBC1 in 2011. Now, it’s must-see TV in many households, including ours.

Presenters Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman are obviously not only very talented (Osman devised the programme and comes up with the questions, Armstrong was already a successful comedy actor) but they have a teasing relationship that creates an atmosphere of gentle fun.

Anyone can play it, and shine, and it’s full of fascinating facts. Job done.
