IT’S important to acknowledge the latest research findings by the Alzheimer’s Society showing that two in five of us wrongly believe that dementia suffers don’t benefit from seeing loved ones.
Although it’s obviously heartbreaking to be with someone who may not recognise you, the Society found that 64% of sufferers felt isolated from friends and family following diagnosis.
The Society advises people to spend more time with relatives with the condition to prevent loneliness because dementia sufferers have emotional memory. Just failing to recognise us doesn’t mean they don’t benefit from us being there. There’s real food for thought here.
