THE sad celebrity death-toll this year continues with the death of comedy star Caroline Aherne at just 52.

The comedian and BAFTA award-winner honed her comedy skills in the Manchester clubs and wrote for various TV programmes including The Fast Show.

She is best known for the seemingly naïve pensioner TV presenter Mrs Merton who had real-life celebrities on her show. She famously asked Debbie McGee “What first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?”

Her gentle but killer wit was shown to great effect in The Royle Family, which she created with fellow writer and performer Craig Cash. In 2000, however, she said she wouldn’t appear on TV again and, although she continued writing, she didn’t.

She provided voiceovers for Gogglebox and Pound Shop Wars but, privately, she was battling cancer.

She was undoubtedly a major comedy talent and, like Victoria Wood, leaves a massive hole in the entertainment world. Like Wood, her observations on life were devastatingly accurate - she knew exactly where the nation’s funnybone was situated.
