ONE of the things I love about this time of year is the way that people light up their homes for Christmas.

There are the plainly-lit dwellings with just a few rows of light, those that add seasonal designs and those – and I really admire their guts – who completely go for it.

The Bolton News has been featuring some fantastic examples, like the home of the Kennair family in Grange Road, Bromley Cross, which is decorated with 9,000 lights and a 15-foot illuminated reindeer. They have been raising money for Bolton Hospice, and this is certainly a lovely way to gain funds for a good cause.

Not everyone likes Christmas lights, of course, and many prefer to confine decorations to the inside of their homes rather than the outside which is entirely their choice.

But there is something about decorated homes that brings a seasonal smile to the lips and a lightening of the heart. These beacons of colour just cheer us up, and help us enjoy our Christmas more.
