THE idea of schools fining parents is highly unpopular and always prompts protests.

The latest idea– already in force in some areas - is to fine parents up to £60 if their children are repeatedly late for school and, unless there is a very good excuse, I agree completely with this.

It is not for individual parents to define how school-life will be carried out.

Parents have to conform to school rules just as much as their children do, and getting a child to school in time for classes to start is one of the most basic ones.

It’s vital for schools to keep to rules which have been created for all pupils to give them a proper education.

Children also need to learn that it’s important to get out of bed, get ready and get going. It’s a simple, early lesson that will help them through a working life.
