WHILE some reality shows make you cringe one stands out as a beacon of brilliance – 24 Hours in A & E.

This cleverly-conceived Channel 4 show covers a 24-hour period in the busy Accident and Emergency Department of St George’s Hospital in South London – although it could be any major hospital on any day.

The fly-on-the-wall documentary simply unfolds over a time-frame as patients are admitted and hospital staff respond with their admirable blend of professionalism and caring.

The device of allowing patients and their families and the various staff members to mostly narrate and explain circumstances involves viewers intimately with every patient.

Their stories are compelling and the moments between patients and loved ones often very touching. This programme highlights the NHS at its finest and as a well-oiled and effective health “machine” that copes with all the horrific challenges that injury and accident can throw the way of its hard-working staff.

It never ceases to touch the emotions – and one of those is definitely pride in this service.
