JODRELL Bank isn’t the most obvious regional attraction for a day out with the children but perhaps it should be.

The world’s first radio astronomy observatory, based in Cheshire and just down the motorway, is now also a tourist centre and has been nominated for Unesco World Heritage status.

This would put it alongside the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal in world significance and acknowledge its many achievements yet it’s often missed off the average family’s regular list of enjoyable days out.

Perhaps in 2018 more of us will learn to appreciate this wonder on our doorsteps.
