WHEN they’re giving out awards let’s hope that Sandra Owen’s name is in the frame.
The grandmother from Moses Gate was so concerned about the closure of a council-funded day centre for older people that she quit her job as a carer and launched her own over- 50s social club at St Gregory’s Hall in Church Street, Farnworth.
Mrs Owen, aged 50, said she was “really touched” when she read about the plight of the older people, some of whom are aged 100. Now, her centre has bingo, dominoes and other games and there are arts and crafts sessions available.
She’s trying to keep prices down to help individuals and Bolton Council and the Ring and Ride transport scheme have given it the thumbs-up.
It’s a great example of fixing a local problem by getting out there and doing it yourself.
Mrs Owen officially has a heart of gold in my book.
