ONE in five with no qualifications. I was saddened when I learnt some years ago that primary children finished school at 3pm.
When I was at school in the 1960s, we finished at 4pm. I am horrified when I think of all the learning they are missing.
There are many fun ways to learn — quizzes, spelling tests. In the 1960s there was no breakfast TV; it consisted of educational programmes.
We enjoyed hundreds more learning hours than our counterparts today and how grateful I am we did.
Discipline was stricter, fear of punishment — a stern ticking off in front of the class — was a great incentive for getting your learning done.
