I SUSPECT many readers who watched BBC1’s Antiques Roadshow on Sunday felt very proud to learn how Joel Halliwell gained his VC in the First World War, whilst serving in the Lancashire Fusiliers (11th Bn) as a lance-corporal.

His heroic actions led him to receive the award at Muscourt, France, on May 27, 1918, and be mentioned in the London Gazette on July 25, 1918.

He lived until June 1958 and is buried in Boarshaw New Cemetery, Middleton. It was so poignant also that Mr Halliwell’s daughter should be taken to the final resting place of his brother, Thomas, who served in the war as a private in the Borders Regiment.

By coincidence, I shall be staying near the Warloy-Baillon Cemetery later this year and should like to pay my own respects too.
