RE “Disaster of same-sex marriages” (Letters, March 29), by name and address supplied.

Name and address supplied really should come out of the closet. Why write such a letter if you are not prepared to put your name to it.

As for the comments the letter contained, I have seen no rush for gay men and lesbians to marry, although they now have equal rights to do so in a ceremony that is between two adults if they choose, unlike the old Church of England marriages where children were the bride and groom.

In the 1700s, decades after the formation of non-conformist chapels, the government allowed marriages to be conducted in non-conformist chapels for the first time.

In those days, people like name and address supplied, were shouting loud that it would bring down the Church.

The CofE still exists, although very few people go to church, not because of the competition but because people see many religions preaching hatred and promoting the personal prejudices of bigoted individuals.

What right does name and address supplied have to interfere with the rights and freedoms of other law-abiding people, who, in the matter of marriage, would do so for love?
