HAVING welcomed Bolton Council's crackdown on “Chuggers” I wondered if their attention could be extended to the charity collectors in Morrisons supermarket.
From the moment customers enter this store they are confronted by rattling charity boxes and groups pestering for money at the checkouts.
This has now reached saturation point and is nothing short of legalised begging.
At least “Chuggers” can be given a wide berth in Victoria Square but in the supermarket customers are put in an uncomfortable position at the checkouts being forced to come face to face with the collectors and made to feel that they are obliged to contribute or will be deemed "mean" by the others watching in the queue.
I believe the public should choose if, when and where they want to donate and not have it forced at them.
I see that the police are posting notices with a telephone number around Bolton asking the public to report any begging which is a criminal offence.
