JUST to let you know that on the day of the Ironman race (Sunday, July 20), I rode the route.
At the top of Sheephouse Lane — just after the sharp left hand bend — there were words, daubed in large yellow paint, of a racist nature.
This was in place at the time of the event and not written afterwards, as stated in The Bolton News. I agree that this shouldn’t have any reflection on the event, which in itself was superb.
However, I rode part of the Tour de France route up through Cragg Vale on the day before the Tour Stage.
It was evident that someone, possibly the organisers, had painted out a number of vulgar or inappropriate messages.
That seemed to me to be good management of the event and one which the promoters, both of Ironman and the surrounding councils, ought to take account of in the future.
