Library and staff provide a vital service
LIBRARIES may have suffered thanks to recent cuts but it’s very reassuring to see that Bolton Central Library was the second most visited across the North-west last year.
Housed in the magnificent sweep of Le Mans Crescent, it had just short of 530,000 visitors during 2014. Even though the region now has 14 fewer libraries, the Central Library stands as a beacon of information that is almost unparalleled.
Bolton closed five libraries in 2012 but the remaining centres and services have stayed open and the Council has vowed not to close any more. Some jobs may go, however, and there will have to be cuts.
The Central Library has among its services a large lending collection, a reference collection, study areas, a children’s library, ebooks, audiobooks and Wi-fi. Best of all, it has staff with a wide knowledge and experience – keeping that genuine wealth for the town is simply vital.
