BAD news for smoothie fans who buy commercial brands and consider they’ve taken their “five a day” fruit and veg.
Now, health watchdogs warn that many of the most popular smoothies and supermarket own brands are also very high in sugar and calories while low in fibre and vitamins compared with fresh fruit and veg.
In our house, my husband makes up a daily smoothie for us with everything from broccoli and carrots to lemons and apples. The result is sometimes unappealing-looking, but the health results are great. It’s all pure stuff and doesn’t cost a fortune – make your own.
