NOT all reality TV is quality viewing but 24 Hours in A & E definitely is.
The programme that monitors a day in the life of the busy Accident and Emergency Department of St George’s Hospital in Tooting, London, returned for a new series on Monday and, as ever, didn’t disappoint.
The “stars” here are not only the ordinary patients who often display astonishing bravery in the face of genuine adversity and trauma but their partners and families who visibly show love in every way.
The mesmerising “performances”, however, really come from the overworked but cheery staff. From the brilliant doctors and nurses who deal with terribly damaged bodies and often very poor prognoses to the porters and reception staff who try to be unfailingly helpful.
Everyone is aware that our NHS is strained and underfunded but, at the sharp end of the service, it still works best. If you want to get an overview of the strength of our national health service, don’t miss this fascinating Channel 4 series.
