A WEEK ago I was lucky enough to be a “dragon” in a Dragons' Den style event run by the Rotary Club of Horwich.

They annually give away sums to local groups and this enjoyable event, first tried successfully last year, was the method they chose to select the recipients.

Eight organisations each stated their case to receive grants of £500, providing a fascinating opportunity to witness those working in the community. The scouts, beavers and brownies joined a dance school, sports clubs, cheerleaders and elderly residents explaining how the money could make a difference to what they did and how it affected others.

It provided a revealing microcosm of how organisations underpin activities and care in just one area, and it proved impressive. We don’t tend to see how people care for others – this includes the Rotary movement – but here it was in action. I felt privileged to help.
