FACEBOOK tends to hit the headlines when something goes wrong.

Someone posts something outrageously inappropriate or someone famous makes a controversial observation.

The social media site can, however, be a major force for good. There were two excellent examples of this last week. In one, Fanworth man Jason Oakes posted about the theft of his motorbike which put his new job in jeopardy. He got it back.

And an 11 year-old Leicestershire boy now has a new kidney after years of ill-health after Edward Batch, a plainly remarkable man, read about his plight on Facebook and posted offering one of his.

The two are now doing well.

Like any area of the media, it’s not the medium which is intrinsically good or bad, it’s the people using it. For all the mindless trolls and idiots who post banalities there are many, many more who use it well – often spectacularly well.
