IT was a shame to see Bolton’s last independent petrol station finally close its doors at the weekend after 68 years’ trading.
Wilkinson Brothers in Adrian Road, Smithills, has been run by the same family all that time, but the depreciation in fuel and competition from supermarkets meant that, like many other independent stations, it had to finally close. Customers will be sorry to see it go but it reflects modern retail methods. We need more independents in Bolton, not fewer, to offer customers a more varied service but the financial facts of life are often against this.
