BBC TV sports presenter Mike Bushell knows the value of sports in the UK today.

Well, he should. He’s tried out 474 of them for his regular weekend news slot and was speaking about his experiences at Bolton School to help inspire the next generation.

He told pupils that everyone has the “instinct to play” and this, along with the social and physical benefits, is the essence of sport.

It’s a fascinating life lesson and Mike should be commended from leading so effectively from the front. And how else would we know about the joys of bog-snorkelling and worm-charming?
