IT is completely logical that, having made such a success of The Night Manager, the BBC are looking to serialise yet another John Le Carre novel.

The same team are going to bring The Spy Who Came In From The Cold to the small screen. It’s set in the 1960s Cold War, features British agent Alec Leamas, and Richard Burton starred in the 1965 film original.

Simon Beaufoy, writer of films Slumdog Millionaire and The Full Monty, will work on it and The Ink Factory will reprise their TV production.

Just a quick request: can there be a part for Tom Hiddleston in this, please? He was brilliant in The Night Manager, as were Hugh Laurie (sinister and cold) and Olivia Coleman (bright and brave).

Their appearance here earned all three Golden Globes for their roles and Le Carre’s clever unravelling story kept viewers glued to their screens for weeks.

But it was Hiddleston who held the whole thing together, and is a convincingly cool spy when it matters most.
