HOW do you feel about sequels and prequels of iconic films and TV series?
Unfortunately, the reality often falls far short of the starry magneticism of the original. I’m thinking of the remake of “Dad’s Army” and the latest “Beauty and the Beast” film.
When it was announced that Disney were making a £150 million sequel to “Mary Poppins” it seemed to reinforce the negative feelings. How on earth could anyone compete with Julie Andrews?
Even when it was announced that a personal favourite, actress Emily Blunt, was taking the lead role, it didn’t really assuage the doubts.
Now, however, early film shots of “Mary Poppins Returns” suggest that, not only is she made for the role, but it could actually be very good.
Even Julie Andrews, who won an Oscar for the 1965 hit film, was positive, saying: “It’s not a re-creation of the original, it’s a brand new one.”
So I guess I’ll just have to reserve judgement, and wait for the magic to start all over again.
