TO generations of tennis fans Romanian tennis ace Ilie Nastase was one of the sports most gifted players.
He set Wimbledon alight with his skills, and hearts fluttering with his good looks and dangerous image.
Nicknamed “Mr Nasty”, he was famous then (in the ‘70s) for speaking his mind and it looks like he’s still doing that today at the age of 70.
The former world No.1 interrupted a press conference twice to ask the captain of the British women’s team, Anne Keothavong, for her room number. This must have left Anne, 16 weeks pregnant with her second child, highly embarrassed.
Fame, as many famous men have never learned, does not entitle you to the freedom of every woman you meet like an old-fashioned lord of the manor.
Ilie should take a leaf from the book of another legendary ‘70s tennis player Bjorn Borg. He was recently in Bolton and apparently polite and respectful to everyone he met.
So, back off, Mr Nasty. Your sexist behaviour doesn’t score points here.
