THE awarding of respected travel body TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence to steeplejack Fred Dibnah’s former Bolton home is not only a tribute to him but to another man.
Leon Powsney’s vision in buying Fred’s former home in Radcliffe Road and, with a group of dedicated helpers, turning it into the Fred Dibnah Heritage Centre has involved a particularly tough journey.
At times, the task must have seemed overwhelming but Leon inspired people to support the project because of his genuine admiration for Fred and what he achieved.
The tourism award reflects the thousands of visitors who now flock to the town to see the site, and the determination of one man who wanted the sort of legacy of which Fred himself would no doubt have been very proud.
