WHAT a pity that we’re losing the “quiet carriages” from some commuter trains.
These oases of peace with phones and loud conversations banned are now disappearing after train operators CrossCountry and First Great Western found it too difficult for their staff to enforce. So noisy phones, gadgets and singing drunken passengers triumph in yet another victory for the yobs.
We desperately need places offering somewhere quiet at a time when noise is everywhere and everyone believes it is their right to hold loud phone conversations anywhere they want to. The train operators were certainly on the right track, so it’s a shame they’ve now been derailed.
