I SUPPOSE it’s about time that Emmerdale’s Andy Sugden became central to the rural soap’s love interest because he’s earned the right.

Actor Kelvin Fletcher has been playing the role since 1996 and his character has recently been involved in a farmyard accident where he lost the use of his arm. He’s also been having a fling with older woman Bernice and is now involved once more with ex-wife, Katie, played by Bolton’s Sammy Winward.

I always thought Andy was a bit dull, actually, but female interest in the actor – and thus also in his character – has been sparked latterly by the fact that he’s turned himself into a hunk. His gym-honed torso is often on display for the flimsiest of reasons (oh, must be Tuesday so I’ll get my kit off) but few women viewers are complaining.

In fact, the soap has definitely sharpened up all round with quirky characters, absorbing storylines and well-written scripts. Coronation Street producers please note.
