I AM member of the Manchester branch of the No Glory Campaign, which seeks to prevent the memorial activities connected with the First World War becoming a celebration of British victory in the war.

This was the way in which former Education Secretary Michael Gove thought it ought to be presented in schools and led him to deplore the satirical Oh What A Lovely War and Blackadder because they might lead pupils to question that view!

The view of the campaign is that, to put it at the very minimum, and using utilitarian criteria, the sheer volume of suffering and death caused by that war was so great that no political aim could possibly justify it.

And what was the result of the War to end Wars? The rise of Nazism, the Holocaust and World War Two. It is vital that the No Glory view be represented in church and school events. It certainly won’t be if such events exclusively involve military or quasi military organisations like the British Legion or the Gallipoli organisation.

It is vital, if only in the interests of balance, that at events a speaker representing the No Glory view should have an opportunity of presenting it. By all means invite the British Legion, provided No Glory is invited as well.
