AS a regular user of the train service between Bolton and Manchester, I applaud any initiatives that are likely to improve on the status quo.
I am therefore enthusiastic about the prospect of restoring platform 5 at Bolton Station. My heart sinks whenever I approach platform 3, usually to be confronted by a crowd trying to squeeze into two pathetic bus-type units that should have been sent to the scrapyards years ago.
If re-opening platform 5 will mean more trains, well and good, but we need more coaches. Nothing less than six will do and more at peak times. In addition, it is a disgrace that Metrolink has not been extended to Bolton. This would alleviate the hell that has to be endured by commuters.
