WITH regards to the letter about economic migrants, October 7, the writer has made one massive, fundamental error.

All asylum seekers have to come here direct. If they come through any other safe country then they require visas to enter the UK, by law.

They cannot seek asylum if they have come through a “safe country” or another “EU” country.

Also, let us not forget that asylum seekers cannot claim any benefits (although they do get food and clothing tokens to survive) and they are not allowed to work until asylum has been granted.

Any non-EU citizen wanting to come into the UK either to live or work require visas, even if they come via another EU country – this has always been the case and since we never signed the Schengen Agreement, it is still the case.

Let us not forget that UK and Eire are the only two countries, within the EU, that never signed the Schengen Agreement and as such entry and exit are the same as they were before we joined the EEC.
