THE English pub is part of our heritage and symbolises everything that is unique about our culture.

Nowhere else in the world would we find such a facility.

It is with growing frustration that we hear of closures up and down the country every day of the week. With little or no help coming from central government, something must be done immediately to halt the situation.

The latest casualty locally is the Red Lion pub at Blackrod which dates back to 1841 which is due to be demolished to make way for family homes.

This old pub adds character to the street and will probably be replaced by a block of featureless houses. I therefore fully support the campaign to stop this madness and wish it every success in the future.
