NEWS Editor Steven Thompson's column piece (April 4), regarding the welcome news that Bolton is undergoing much needed large scale investment by the Conservative Government in its rail infrastructure, including environmentally friendly electrification was surprisingly singled out as a negative development (considering the Bolton News has had a long running rail campaign to support such investment).

This leaves me mystified, as the Bolton News wasn't particularly bothered over the 13 years of inaction by the last Labour government on this issue,

especially as that included having the then Bolton West MP Ruth Kelly as Transport Secretary.

Steven's criticism is surprising considering it is an important part of the much wider Northern Powerhouse proposals by George Osborne, which has been welcomed by all parties (including Labour).

As for the consequences of this infrastructure work how does he expect such wide scale engineering work to be properly carried out without some disruption — the biggest since the railways were built in the Victorian era.

So why complain about something positive that will improve once finished Bolton's rail services and environment?

Sorry Steve but you are wrong.
