I SEE that the Managing Director of PSP (Letters April 4) believes that over 30 correspondents to the Bolton News and the thousand and more people who have so far signed the on-street and on line petitions have inaccurately interpreted their intentions regarding the development of the University's student village.

How can this be when we have all seen the same drawings that they have presented?

The 'genie is now out of the bottle' and no amount of backtracking will persuade the people of Bolton that the scheme as presented can be suitably modified to preserve the green space of Cheadle Square and the open view and public access to the rear of Le Mans Crescent.

The simple fact is that if the proposed block covering Cheadle Square is removed from the PSP/University student village plan then the whole scheme collapses.

So we will continue to repeat our message until it gets through: this is the wrong scheme in the wrong place. This is why we have consistently advised that if they must develop University accommodation in this area it should be on the former bus station site — as shown on our plan featured in the Bolton News on March 25.

This plan also illustrates how this area can be reclaimed as a Civic Park with tree-lined public open space and wide pedestrian walkways. What we need is civic space that will invite the public to once more feel part of the town centre and proud of it, not monolithic 'town cramming' on the last open area we have left in the town centre.

Whilst trying to persuade us of the virtues of his scheme, perhaps Mr Cunnington could enlighten us on the nature of his company and their relationship with Bolton Council and the University.

Our group is currently preparing an alternative 'vision' for the Town Centre which will offer maximum public participation in its production. The people of Bolton can then decide whether they wish to be dictated to by a Council which doesn't listen or create their own plan which fully embraces their aspirations. With the local elections looming, there is a real opportunity for us to change the way our town is run. We urge the voters to grasp that opportunity.
