ON Friday, David Cameron announced that if elected, the Conservatives would move to make sure that regulated ticket prices would not rise more than inflation for five years — an effective freeze on rail fares.

This is great news for Bolton residents, many of whom commute to places like Manchester every day for work.

This policy allows for a potential saving of £400 by 2020.

This isn’t the only good news for Bolton commuters. Following a pledge by the Prime Minister and campaigning by Bolton residents, Northern Rail has committed to adding two extra carriages to the morning service to Manchester.

Extra carriages will help ease the burden of commuting in one of the busiest periods of the day.

Thankfully, more should be coming.

The electrification process which forms part of the Northern Hub has received much-needed help from the Department for Transport and will mean a better service for Bolton residents.

Electrified tracks mean that trains on average have at least four carriages, with much potential for more. Indubitably, this will mean better train travel for Bolton residents isn’t far down the line.
