I HAVE previously expressed my concerns about the proposed works to the Town Hall which I think are ill conceived and inappropriate.

From the reactions and responses I have received directly and those reported in The Bolton News it is clear that many others share my view. There are also many objections listed on the Council’s website.

It was amazing that at the Council meeting when Councillor Morris tried to debunk objections saying we did not know what we were talking about. The plans are clearly displayed on the Council’s planning website under reference 93554/15 for “Formation of terraced seating area on Victoria Square elevation together with enlargement of windows to form glazed doors.” In addition there was a public consultation organised by the Council in January which I and one other councillor attended so the planning application is well known.

Councillor Morris’ further claim that those of us who have objected should not be allowed to sit on the Planning Committee as we had expressed a view was also totally wrong. Has he not read the Localism Act 2011? To help I refer him to Clause 25, (2)(a), which abolishes the former Labour Governments ban on councillors speaking out?

What is clear from this his reaction to objections in Councillor Morris’ world unless you agree with him you should not express a view. I am sorry to disappoint him but I will continue to speak out about this municipal vandalism. As councillors we are after all custodians of the Borough’s heritage.
