I WOULD love to register my absolute objection to establishing a café and restaurant within the Town Hall complex.

There are so many eating establishments within the town centre already and, with dwindling town centre footfall, these could became white elephants very quickly but the façade of the Town Hall cannot ever be reinstated to the beautiful building it is.

The people of Bolton do not want the council to do this and we desperately want councillors to listen to us. They did not listen about the Market Hall and now it is just a corridor to Debenhams. People used to come to Bolton’s Market Hall from other towns – now they go to Bury.

Regarding the option of student accommodation on Cheadle Square – why can’t the soon to be disused bus station accommodate students if accommodation is so desperately needed.

There isn’t a queue to get into Bolton’s University and, certainly, a lack of student accommodation in the middle of the town centre will not dissuade anyone from coming here.

We are not all Philistines – we have Bolton’s best interests at heart – indeed the letters in The Bolton News are from some very eminent Boltonians.

Whether they will be listened to or not has yet to be seen. I really hope so – let’s make it a first. Leave the façade and fountains as they are and build a Bolton town centre to make us all happy and proud rather than in years to come lamenting about great how it used to be.
