I FIND it incomprehensible and wearisome that there are still people like Steve Jones (‘Banks not the government to blame for our economic woes’ Friday, May 8) who fail to acknowledge the last Labour Government’s role in the UK recession, preferring instead to believe in some conspiracy concerning the press.

Although it would be unfair, and incorrect, to lay all of the blame at their door, this continued refusal to accept any responsibility for the crisis, by Labour sympathisers and party members alike, is astonishingly arrogant and dismissive of the intelligence of the voting public.

Last week, it was clear the electorate was not fooled by these wilful untruths. Trying to distance themselves from something they were so clearly implicated in has backfired massively on the Labour Party. Some humility and an apology may have gone a long way to restoring faith amongst the public; however, it doesn’t look as though we shall be receiving either anytime soon.

It is widely recognised that Ed Miliband’s refusal to accept Labour overspent when in Government was an election defining ‘moment’. However, I am sure that many voters had made their minds up long before this denial. As long as the Labour Party continues to treat the electorate as fools, they will remain devoid of credibility and out of power.
