IN her recent interview with the Bolton News Yasmin Qureshi MP bemoans the fact that in polling around 37% of the votes across the UK Conservatives have a small majority of seats in Government.

Her argument in then suggesting that the majority of voters supported left wing policies ignores that fact that if other centre right parties and the speaker’s votes are included then the right/left split of votes is around 50/50 so voters did not as she suggests vote by majority for left wing policies.

What Ms Qureshi conveniently ignores in her interview is the comparable situation at a local level. In Bolton Council elections Labour polled only marginally more, 39% of the votes, but won 14 out of 22 seats and still hold 39 out of 60 seats on the Council. On this she is strangely silent.

I am not in any way suggesting we need an alternative voting system merely that Ms Qureshi might consider being more even handed in her statements.
