I WAS appalled to see the front page news that Bolton Council will be spending £2m introducing smaller grey bins for general waste for all the Bolton residents.

Who on earth thinks up these so called money saving schemes? I understood that Bolton has an incinerator for general waste so there should be much less going to landfill thereby reducing costs.

Isn't it about time that Bolton council and their recycling partner Viridor started looking for more markets in which to use the waste from Bolton. This new scheme will ensure more fly tipping thereby costing us more to sort out longer term, families will struggle with a smaller bin.

I watched a TV programme recently about waste recycling in Newcastle — brilliant. They recycle everything and even ship out waste to Scandinavia for generating electricity. These councils are thinking outside the box and coming up with innovative ways to use the waste, which are more effective than the cost of landfill.

We have hardly changed the pattern of waste recycling in Bolton since it was first introduced so let's find new innovative ways of dealing with it. Oxford has over 70% recycling! Why can't we. All plastics should be fully recycled not just plastic bottles (yoghurt pots, butter tubs, food trays etc). Why not see if other councils in the north can partner Bolton with other types of recycling, the excuse that diesel is too expensive does not ring true, when £2m is being spent on yet another ill-thought out scheme, giving the excessive costs of landfill as a valid reason. We are way behind Europe and are being held back by a lack of vision once again from this council.

Exactly who has been consulted on this proposal, the council say there is broad support in consultations they have done. If this is so, please let us know how many were consulted and what areas of Bolton. I certainly have never been asked. I recycle all that I can and would dearly love to do more but am limited with the small numbers of items Bolton is willing to recycle.
