I’M sure all readers will agree wholeheartedly with the concerns expressed in the two letters (Need Better Drivers, Cyclists and drivers, June 8).

We need drivers to be more aware of what is going on around them to avoid and prevent accidents on the road. How many of us have driven along a familiar road and at our destination realised that we can’t remember the road at all? I’m sure we’ve all done it some time or another. But if a child ran out in front of our car would we have avoided hitting it? How would we live with ourselves if we injured a child – or even worse?

So, can we, as responsible motorists do anything to ensure our driving is the best it can be?

We are fortunate in Bolton to have an Advanced Driving Group which has been recognised as the most successful in the North West. We can be helped to become “thinking drivers” and increase our observation hugely. Not only we will also save fuel – better for the environment – but we can expect to get cheaper car insurance with a specialist company dealing only with advanced motorists.

Everyone who joins an advanced course will be helped by a friendly and supportive observer who will guide and advise about raising your game!

Four courses are run every year. The next one starts on Wednesday 22nd July at 7.00pm at the Lostock Parish Centre, Tempest Road, Lostock, Bolton, BL6 4E. For further information contact Annette Gamble on 01706 825405 or visit the website boltoniam.org.uk.
