"Prove you need big bin" Letters, June 1. The aim is to recycle 45% up from the current level of 38%.
We are expected to achieve this by reducing the overall capacity of collectable waste per household by 11% (for households with four full sized bins). The capacity saving comes entirely from the bin that's almost always full.
This logic is fine if there is on average excess capacity in the three recycling bins and recyclable waste is evenly split three ways. This is definitely not the case in my household as we can always fill the green bin just from garden waste whereas the white bin only needs to be emptied monthly.
If the council is serious about moving in this direction it needs a more flexible approach to bin combinations it will allow and collect.
Otherwise I fear this project will further drive the scourge of fly tipping.
