THE Council must be applauded for taking the proactive steps of completely removing the heavy industrial fly tipping and then blocking off the unused part of Aquaduct Rd in Darcy Lever.

Because vehicular access is now prevented no-one has driven a van down the lane and tipped on a large scale. Well done to all concerned - a great result as prevention is far cheaper than cleaning up every few months.

Residents of The Haulgh and Darcy Lever are also making good use of the excellent new cycle and footpath route along the old railway, which runs immediately above Aquaduct Rd.

Not only does this "off-road" route provide great recreational and health value to enjoy this "green lung" it also gives local people convenient access to the Manchester Road and its retail facilities.

Perhaps this whole area of woods and open space from St Peter's Way, Raikes Lane and Smith Lane to Lever Bridge, might now be designated as a Local Nature Reserve, given the historical value of its industrial archaeology and the extensive wildlife habitat. Recognition, protection, publicity and increased use of our valuable, inner-city, green spaces raises awareness and benefits all the community.
