RE Nat Lofthouse v Wayne Rooney.

May I add the following to show show that our Nat is greater that Mr Rooney.

On the official list of English footballers, of the games players and goals scored average, Nat comes third from top with 30 goals and 33 matches. Only Steve Bloomer and Vivian Woodward are above him.

Wayne Rooney, as we well know, has 50 goals in 107 games. Congratulations to him in becoming England's leading scorer.

But he is not, as the media portray him, great. They have made him the most overrated and overpaid player in the history of football.

I like Wayne, but I must point out another salient point. In the 50s, there used to be matches between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

I often wondered why these goals were never counted to the players' tally.

I wrote to the FA and they replied that these matches were exhibition matches so they did not count.

Nat played and scored a number of goals for England — in one match he scored six and would have broken a record but for the fact that captain Billy Wright refused to let him take a penalty near the end.

I still believe though that it is the over-the-top media's fault and not Wayne's.
