IN his first monthly column in the paper (August 27) Cllr Cliff Morris said he would try to respond to questions from residents and in particular "what is the council doing about Bolton town centre."

He told us nothing that we did not already know.

He, and Nikki Wilson-Cooke, Manager of the Market Place in a separate article, keep telling us about exciting new shops but since none of them have been named.

The one off events such as the Food and Drink Festival are only temporary and are what you have when you have a successful town centre. They alone will not regenerate it if you do not have a good retail centre.

The cinema will fail because people will not want to leave it late at night to walk amongst the drunks and druggies to get to their transport home.

You can also forget about the live feeds from concerts and theatres except possibly pop concerts. People interested in the arts will continue to go to park free at Cineworld who have been showing such events for several years.

They understand that an arts theatre experience is completely different from showing a film.
