AS a regular supporter of our local markets I am sad to see that Farnworth market has got its final day for closure.
This is just another nail in the coffin of an all ready struggling town. Bolton Labour Council has encouraged the closure of this market, first by the encouragement of supermarkets, secondly by the poor parking facilities, thirdly and most important the engineered indecisiveness about its future.
No small business man is going to open up a business in circumstance where he does not know whether he will be able to put a meal on the table for his children. Certainly banks or the small business venture would not look favourably on such a contract. The loss of these small business does nothing for the status of Bolton Labour Council. Sadly Bolton Market is about to be hit a blow when the bus station moves. At present many of the new stall holders are already in financial difficulties through lack of business.
My own observations show that the near twenty cafés are serviced mainly by pensioners. These will be the first to be troubled as pensioners lay off the market because of the distance with their heavy bags to the new bus station.
