I'VE enjoyed reading about the Palais.

Myself and three girl friends went to the Palais every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday come rain, shine, snow. I think not many of the people now enjoying the dancing will remember the dance band leader who was Johnnie Healy from Crompton Way and the singer was Olive.

This was going on when the war was on and, when the night dancing closed, our gang walked through the town to the railway station where the buses were waiting to take the workers from the ammunitions factory home and the bus drivers used to let us get on and take us home.

When the sirens used to go off we used to go the air raid shelter under the fish market!

Happy memories from two 90-year-old dancing girls.
